New Barn and Outdoors

So my last post 3 months ago was the old barn coming down and the framing of the new barn going up.  So here is the completion . . .

We have placed a lot more sod down around the house, but around the barn area we've seeded and are seeing a good "catch" of grass start.  We've had lots of rain this winter, well really all year.  So good for our new plantings, but a little mucky around the barns until we get groundcover established.

Pete has his workshop set up in the new barn and I'm now able to park my car inside again.  The barn has a loft with room for lots of extra storage.  Duke and Smokey now have their own spaces, though Duke much prefers his time in the house with us.  Future plans include a birthing/newborn pen for baby animals and a refrigerator and freezer for eggs, milk, cheese, and garden harvest! We've even used the new barn for entertaining, housing the bar and snacks for a Christmas Party!

We also put in most of the driveway, some additional walkways and added both new landscape beds and new plantings to some of our establishing beds.

The garden did well and we've expanded our fresh and preserved food supply.  Using a dehydrator we've dried our own tomatoes, peppers, parsley, tarragon, and ginger, as well as bananas (yum!), pineapple, raisins, and apples.  We have in our root cellar (affectionately known as "the bunker") 70# of our homegrown sweet potato, horseradish, plenty of homemade wine (merlot, cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, pinot grigio, chardonnay, and my favorite peach), hard cider, and wheat beer.  We pickled dill pickles and made sauerkraut and kimchee with our cabbage and carrots.  Pete's has absolutely mastered bread and pizza dough as well as pies . . .  nothing beats blackberry pie from fresh berries harvested in our woods!

Pete's now trying his hand at ice wine.  Additional 2014 plans include more landscaping, a patio and outdoor kitchen, and a kitchen garden.

That's just some of the outdoor goings on at Green Pasture Farm over the last half of 2013!

Check out the next post about the farm animals!
