We are Farm Owners

Greetings Friends & Family!

We are now officially owners of our very own 14.3 acres farm in Prosperity, SC. We thought it would be fun to chronicle our journey for ourselves . . . and well . . . why not include those of you who would like to follow along.

First, I guess we should explain a little more. This all started with 2010 New Year Goals - one of which was what would we like to do in our retirement, when will that be, where, etc., etc. Pete & I have always talked about having some acreage, planting a big garden, maybe raising some animals. In our early relationship, that idea was along the lines of homesteading in Alaska and "living off the land". There have been a variety of iterations over the years including completely abandoning the whole idea. But, as we celebrate our 25th Anniversary this year, we find that our old dream continues to resurface.

So, we thought, lets just drive around and see what's out there . . . you know just information gathering. Well, ok, let's just search Craig's list. Well, these properties look good, let's just look at them . . . . . . and then on Valentine's Day weekend (for all the women reading this - ahhhhhhh!) . . . we looked at this property. In fact, that was the weekend of our snow and it was just so beautiful! As you know Pete & I, once we make our minds up, we move full speed ahead. And on Thursday March 25, we signed the papers and officially became South Carolinian farm owners!

There is so much to tell you, but for now we will share a few pictures of Green Pastures Farm (more on the name another blog post). There are several old barns on the property. Some will need to be taken down and others are quite usable, but may need a little squaring up. However, even the barns to be taken down have wonderful old barn wood that we plan to use in the house we'll be building or other projects we have in mind.

The land has a fair amount of pasture land that is overgrown with brambles and small trees. We have a tractor lined up and Pete is ready to bush hog and chain saw!

There are many beautiful, large, old hardwoods, some fencing remains, and as spring is bursting here in SC, daffodils are popping up everywhere. I love old heirloom bulbs and can't wait to get my plant books up there to start to identify the varieties. There is a late 1800's farmhouse on the property (which you can see in the background on this picture). It will suffice for overnight and weekend stays as we work on the property. It also has some vintage trims/doors/fixtures that we plan to use in the new farmhouse we are building.

We think we have settled on a house plan and will share that in future posts. Pete is starting Monday on clearing a home site!!!!

More to come . . . we'll keep you posted.

Love,
Pete & Debby

  2. Congratulations! Awesome! But are you sure Green Acres wouldn't be a more appropriate name? Is there running water? :-) Laurie
