The Farmhouse

The existing farmhouse on the property is estimated to have been built in the late 1800's. According to the heir that was at our closing, her father was born there in 1910. The property was part of the Hawkin's family land at least 2 generations prior to that. The "old" homestead is further up the road on property adjacent to us. It is in sad disrepair - part of it has already fallen in on itself and is overgrown with vines.

All in all, "our" farmhouse (seems strange to say that) is in pretty good shape. There are no roof leaks, windows and doors are intact, etc. It has heat and a fairly new central air conditioner, as well as electric and water have remained on. As I said in the previous post, it will do for overnight and weekend stays while we are building . . . kind of cabin like.

The previous owner was a bachelor and lived in the home up until a few weeks before his death in 2007. He was in his 80's, confined to a wheelchair in his last few years, but had worked as a logger in his younger years. With that said, the place needs a good cleaning. We will mainly use the bathroom and the kitchen which has an open area large enough to set up the air mattress or cots. The remainder of the rooms (4 others) will be used to store some of our stuff for now.

Pete started the sprucing up process today - with 409 and Clorox, a new toilet seat, new floor covering in the bathroom, the removal of the old oven/stove and a lot of elbow grease! A quick coat of white paint on a few things and some throw rugs scattered about and it won't be bad at all! Oh, and Toby already has one of his beds there to nap on since he'll be going to "work" with Pete everyday.

We are taking our gas grill for cooking (there is an attached covered patio out the back door), a coffee maker, and an electric griddle. Add the purchase of a small microwave and refrigerator (that will be used in the new home's downstairs kitchenette) and it might just be homey ;>)

Thanks for sharing in our journey,

Pete & Debby
